I discovered these rattlesnakes mating, with their rattles crossed, in a patch of cactus while I was hiking on an April day in the Canyon of the Eagles Nature Park, near Burnet, Texas. I had heard a slight rustling in the cactus and was looking for a lizard I supposed to have made the sound. As I walked up on the cactus patch cautiously, I first saw the head of one of the snakes, and wondered why it did not either coil or flee. As I moved around the area at a safe distance, I saw another snake head protruding from the other end of the cactus patch. It was intuitive to look in the center of the cactus patch for an explanation. When I did, this scene as seen through a slight clearing made the reason for the snakes' behavior obvious. I was able to remain and observe from a safe distance, and my 300mm lens allowed me to capture this interesting image of the event.
